Leafy life in January 2023

A big smiley Hello from the lovely Emma, owner of Leafy Couture East Yorkshire

Hello, my names Emma, the owner of Leafy Couture East Yorkshire.

I moved back home to the U.K last year, after 5 years in Vancouver, Canada and embarked on the Leafy Couture journey!

My working life began in digital production, e-commerce fashion companies, creative agencies and working in technology producing apps. As much as I enjoyed my role, collaborating, creating, working with talented individuals and nerding out over productivity tools, I began to feel the Sunday night dread. I think that was the changing point.

I took the introduction to floristry course at Leafy Couture followed by the wedding edit. Sarah was generous with her time and gave honest and invaluable insights. She had a genuine desire for us all to succeed with the message that florists are not in competition with each other, there is enough work for everyone. This message echoed in the Leafy Couture social forum with a community of florists helping each other out.

My first flowery role was as a floral designer position at my local florist. My senior Lynn took me under her wing and invested so much time in me for which I will forever be grateful. It was at this stage that I wanted to start my own venture, but feel part of a supportive team. The Leafy Couture franchise came at an opportune time and I was thrilled to be welcomed into the family.

I decided to pursue something creative that inspired me. I wanted to be a florist specialising in weddings and events

What I love most about my new job are the seasonal changes in florals. Discovering new venues and meeting new people. Collaborating with clients and sharing in meaningful moments.

When it came to my own wedding, I took inspiration from my great grandmother’s bouquet, it was large, extravagant and cascading.

Naturally my bouquet was created by Leafy Couture. The colours were white, green with exquisite pinks; it included all of my favourites, peonies, garden roses, butterfly ranunculus, nigella, sweet peas, poppies to name a few. It was a magnificent trailing beauty and I’m just so obsessed with it

My favourite flowers? I adore peonies, and dahlias

Being the owner of Leafy Couture East Yorkshire, everyday is different but I write a daily checklist to keep me on track.

I tend to spend my mornings on emails and social media over a coffee. If I am anticipating a floral delivery from the wholesaler, I will be ready with my water buckets and snips to get conditioning the abundance of flowers. I prepare any mechanics in advance of weddings and events. I work on mood boards, quotes and have consultations with newlyweds. |For winding down, there is always an afternoon dog walk and a gin and tonic at 4pm.
